How does Garcinia extract work to help you lose weight?
Garcinia Cambogia has earned a reputation as a ‘dual action fat fighter’, making it one of the most popular supplements available on the market today. But what does ‘dual action fat fighter’ actually mean?
Well, to begin with, Garcinia Cambogia contains the active ingredient HCA, or Hydroxycitric Acid. HCA has been found to block the enzyme, Citrate Lyase, a naturally occurring substance within the body that is responsible for converting unused carbohydrates into fat cells.
Blocking the citrate enzyme means that the body’s only option is to turn these excess carbs into Glycogen; the body’s natural fuel.
This process has a two-part effect on the body; the blocking of Citrate Lyase prevents fat cells being created, preventing the body from gaining more weight, while the increase in Glycogen means that the muscles in the body burn existing fat far more effectively.
This essentially turns the body into well oiled, fat fighting machine; converting existing fat into lean muscle, that therefore burns more Glycogen, burning more fat, creating more lean muscle…and so on.
Clinical studies show an overall reduction in body fat
The result of this type of fat burning can be a little confusing however. Since muscle weighs more than fat, the effect of weight-loss may not be seen quite as clearly by looking at the scales.
A study into the effects of Garcinia Cambogia showed that while a person taking Garcinia Cambogia over the course of 12 weeks may only notice a 10% reduction in overall body weight (which is still pretty impressive), they will actually have reduced their overall body fat by as much as 16%.
The dual action effect
The second half of Garcinia Cambogia’s ‘dual action’ claim is the effect that HCA can have on a person’s moods. It has been proven in several clinical trials to increase the brains own levels of serotonin and cortezole, our ‘happy hormones’.
Since these two hormones help to control mood, appetite and stress, Garcinia Cambogia can actually help reduce the appetite and put a stop to emotional and/or stress eating; a common issue when it comes to weight gain.
So, how much weight will you lose?
It’s hard to say with any certainty. As with all weight-loss supplements and diets, the results will vary from person to person.
However, research has shown that the average person can expect to lose around 4lbs a week on Garcinia Cambogia alone and there is plenty of reason to assume that this can be doubled or even tripled with the addition of healthy eating and regular exercise
